Going Great Guns

According to the Doctor, I am going great guns on the scarf. His scarf. That I am only just casting on. I've only cast on 10 stitches, yet, I am going great guns. How's that for your own personal cheer squad? Pretty damn good. Perhaps I should make him some pom-poms that he can use in his cheers. I wouldn't say no.

Can you imagine doing the mundane jobs? Hanging the washing out? Supermarket shopping? Trying to find a park? With your own personal cheers squad all of this becomes interesting. Exciting. I could even start wearing my hair in pigtails and wear a short flippy skirt. On second thoughts, I know about my moon tan, let's scrap the short skirt.

I know you've been wondering what I've been up to. Racking your brains you have been. Twiddling your thumbs. Doodling on notepads (pottymouthmama, potty. mouth. mama. pottymouthmaaaaama). Don't worry. I'm just psychic like that.

Well here's the big news. So listen up. I have been incredibly busy. So incredibly busy. So incredibly important. Doing nothing. Yep. That's right. Nothing that I think anyone would be interested in. Not even my husband. Not even me. That's right. Things at home have been booooo-ring. Well I could tell you the trivial things. Clothes washing. Cleaning the kitchen. Playdough-ing. Clearing the floors. Mopping the floors. Oh my life. It's oh-so-glamorous (please imagine me reclining on the couch, hand to brow in a silk-satin dressing gown, hair in rollers, false eyelashes and some spectacularly stupidly high stilettos to totter around the house in. Truth is, old t-shirt, pyjama pants and high - oh-how-I-love-them ugg boots). Did I mention my nails are splitting from all the washing up?

Oh Groundhog Day. Release me. Release me. Send me something exciting. The highlight of my day lately is Masterchef. Is there something wrong with me? I may need to start singing Gershwin (out of tune of course).

Another highlight, walking to the park. To the shops. To anywhere. It's so great to be outside in this chilly-billy weather. Winter, you're early, but oh how I adore you.

To Sew, Or Not To Sew

I am in two minds peeps. Sewing resumes tonight, but I don't know if I can be bothered - not just for tonight, but re-committing for the entire term. Bad, isn't it? I am feeling a little stressed about it. But then, I could continue building on my newfound sewing skills. Or stay at home and enjoy some hand sewing. What to do, what to do?

I went op shopping. Kind of a way to forget the thoughts. Sew or not to sew. Op shop or not to op shop. Well that last one is a noooo brainer!

I found a few cute things. In particular, this Humpty Dumpty mug kept in the 'special' cabinet. And the little glass jar.

And an ace vintage men's David Jones trench in classic navy with a zip out wool liner. Pity it was too small for Matt.

Sew.. To sew or not to sew?

Drawing

a duck - see the bill? wild!

We gave the Doctor a chalk marker to draw on the windows. Some people might think we're asking for trouble, grooming our own little graf artist, but we see it as a little art gallery in our house. He's been decorating the windows madly drawing us, the dog, the cat, the ducks. Oh man. Do you know how exciting it is to see his figurative work evolve? Damn exciting. I love those little figures. In fact, I am hooked on them. I am always asking him to do me artworks because they are so damn clever.

On another front, how beautiful is this new clip from Sia? Shadow play and sign language, colour and cool. She's a clever AUSSIE gal. I know you love it. And this old clip is one of my all time favourites.

ANZAC Day

Today is ANZAC Day. Have you ever been to see the diggers march through the city? I love it. Though we didn't do it today, maybe next year when the kidlets are a little bigger. But seeing those service men and women march is incredible. It has really helped me understand that these are real, live people that went off at an incredibly, heart breakingly young age to fight for our country. And many of them never returned. It made me realise just how many people went off to war.

My favourite spot to perch is right across from the non-marching servicemen and women and nurses. My goodness it is a good spot. They see someone they know and call out and a short dialogue ensues, just as the marcher is marching off. Left - right - left - right.

So I'm watching from home today, with the stray tear in my eye, listening to stories, watching with pride. I love the bagpipes. I love the drummers. It's incredibly moving. If you get the chance to go and watch next year, do it.

Still on the Aussie front, last night I started making my first project from the Mike's book.

Ta da! It's not finished, oh so close! This is Angela's (Three Buttons) pattern (check out her blog, it's delicious. It's capricious). It's the very handy 'Shopping bag keep-safe' that my kitchen needs! Oh yes, it needs it. I try not to have many plastic bags, but they do somehow muzzle their way into our kitchen and cause quite a riot. What a mess! This is a cure, and it just so happens - shazaaaam! It's an Australiana teatowel. How apt.

And now folks, it's on with the show. I'm going to whip up a batch of ANZAC biscuits to keep the memory alive. Smell some rosemary for rememberance. It's a small tribute.
Here's to honouring the sacrifices made for us. Lest we forget.

Confessions: Guilty Fantasy

I have a guilty confession. It's not that I am mad for cheese. I do like cheese, but I wouldn't go to the end of the Earth to eat cheese. I am more of a sweet tooth. I sneak chocolate. I do not sneak cheese.

But this brings me to a guilty fantasy. I've been thinking about it for a while now, my fantasy. Though I think if it were to come to fruition, it really wouldn't be quite as good as I think it might be.

You see, I love love love toasted cheese sandwiches. Who doesn't? But the fact is, I think I like the cheese that escapes the sandwich more than the sandwich itself. You know when it sizzles on the hotplate and that taste - my goodness - that taste. I've been deliberately loading my sandwiches with too much cheese just to ensure I get to enjoy that melty cheese.

Which brings me to my fantasy. I have been thinking about just putting cheese on the hot plate and cooking it. I've never actually done it, but man oh man, I daydream about how good that melty, slightly burnt cheese would taste. There now. I've said it.

Speaking of cheese. Have I ever told you how much I love crank calls?

A Few Good Things

First up, Jenny of Sublime Stitching fame was Twittering about these ace hoodies that I am big stylie lovin'. Matt's birthday is coming up, and I'm madly looking for a skeleton print hoodie. There's one from HeadHoods and I'm quietly thinking it could be the one.
In the same Tweet, Jenny also mentioned these crazy funny hoodies made from upcycled blow up dolls. Definitely not on Matt's birthday list, but worth a look because they are super clever. Yes?
An interesting piece about eating habits and children.
Have you been hot-footing it to the markets rather than traipsing the supermarche?

I love this song. Always have, always will.

My Eyes Are Just Aching

Here's the scoop. I've been a little slack on the blog front lately. Struggling to post on my own. Reading a few favourites each day (via Google Reader) but hardly commenting. Totally unlike me, because I love to give hi-fives, I love to see what's cookin' in your kitchen (figuratively speaking), I'm mad for a big too-long group huggle, but lately, I feel like my batts are flat. My reader was bulging when it got to over 1000 posts and I knew it was time for myself to have an intervention with...myself.

So I'm trying to be good. I keep every comment in the hope that I will come visit you. I do. I was trying to respond on the day of the comment, but it's hard, so please forgive me. In this case, it really isn't you - it's me. If you don't already, perhaps you can do this...? Kootoyoo has hooked us all up with a super tip that makes it easy to respond to commenters (except for you Anonymous, we don't want to be pen-friends with YOU!).

In an effort to be a become a better member of the blogging community I deleted some blogs from my Google Reader (secretly, I think I just added them because I thought I was cool by association - regardless of the fact they have NO IDEA WHO I AM!), now I am down to 743 posts to read.

Anyway, lately, I've been doing stuff. Stuff and things are good, here's some stuff I have been doing:

- walking training with Tiny. Well she walks, I clap. That's training for you.
- going to Spotlight to buy new bamboo embroidery hoops (because the Doctor gave mine away). Lo and behold, they only have MASSIVE ones, so I have to make do with the plastic. I don't think they are quite so fantastic.
- making casseroles. I love a good casserole.
- drawing with the Doctor.
- knitting. Have to master the art of casting off and then I'm going to do a course to learn to read a pattern.
- embroidery. Now I have a new hoop I can resume stitchin' and then some.
- we're going to visit my parents-in-law's dog Charlie tomorrow. He got hit by a car last Friday and is now the bionic dog with a steel plate in his leg. Go Charlie, go!

Oh and le image? On our way to Spotlight, The Doctor pushing Tiny in the car.

I Got A Little Dog

So he's not real, but I think he's cute. Right? He's ceramic. No need for walks. No picking up poopies. No brushing required. He's hanging in our bedroom and I think Matt is a little scared of him. Sorry Matt. Having a dog is a lifelong commitment.

Knitting: On A Roll

I have news to report people. In the time that I've been away I've watched the entire second season of 'Love My Way'. Man oh man, do I love that show or what?

And - my MIL taught me how to cast on. Did I tell you that I always required either my mum or my sister to do this for me? Well now folks, I am doing it! It probably doesn't look like much, but I've been knitting up a storm. In the photo is what I've managed so far. Slow far, slow good. The Doctor has selected that pale blue for a scarf for him. I'll aim to get it done before the end of Winter.

I now also have developed a mean yarn fetish, while Debbie Bliss is definitely a firm favourite, who could deny that ridiculously addictive soft touch (?!), when I graduate to something a little tricky, I have my sights set on the impossibly cloud-like softness of Alpaca. Sheesh, is that soft or what?!

In other news I've dumped Ashton and Demi on Twitter. We weren't seeing eye to eye. I just never knew what they were banging on about. You know when you hang out with people and they seem to have a plethora of in-jokes? Well it felt like that. Ashton and Demi, it's not me, it's you.

Knit-Wit

I'm about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. I'm going to learn to knit. While I do know how to knit, I don't know how to cast on (my Mum and sister have always got me started). I am a very talented knitter - I can go from starting with 30 stitches, and wind up with 61. Takes a talent, kind of like making something out of nothing, right?

So this weekend, I'm going to learn to knit. Well start to learn how to knit. Good and proper. So I can make more than a scarf (that gets thicker as the knitting continues).

And how good is this? I won a super good giveaway on Knot Sew Crafty (that Alexis sure knows how to put together a kicking fun-pack - will you marry me?) - and what should arrive as part of the goodies? Two balls of Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Aran. Delicious!

And speaking of winners, three winners have been drawn for the Georgie Love Bouncin' Birthday giveaway by the random number generator. I can't do screen grabs, but here are the lucky punters:

- JessicaNeale

Please email me with your addresses and I will post your prizes out ASAP! I will have the Doctor randomly draw the prizes out lucky dip stylie.

A Whole Day's Worth of Posting

I've been sitting here, opening up my blogger account. Closing it. Opening it up. Closing it. Trying to think what I can post about today.

There's not much, I'm afraid. Except to tell you, I've rekindled my love affair with afternoon walks with the smalls. The above is a shot of the Doctor on his trike, and Tiny's feet going skyward in the pram as I stride it out.

So I'll tell you exactly what's happening here. It's not thrilling. Trust me, I can certainly vouch for that.

Yesterday I spent about three hours tidying our pantry. This my friends is not a job I covet. But it had to be done, since for the last week I've been finding small elephant-like beetles coming out of there. Yik! I found the source of these pesky blighters and have removed them. Subsequently, I have spent the past two days on the search for them. Every time I find one is like a small victory. I run around the house with my undies on my head. Just kidding. But man, those things sure know how to breed. And what the heck are they? They've managed to eat through plastic, I've found them in a number of unopened packets - rice noodles, yep they loved them.

And on an even less thrilling front, the Doctor is still sick. I'm thinking he could work as a stunt double for a seal. His cough is as good as. Now I just have to bring out some fish and a ball to balance on his nose and it's a cert. We've clocked up five doctors appointments in the last three weeks. Yikes. This month is not Amazing April. It is living up to my Average April premonition.

Average April. I don't salute you. Not so far, anyway.

PS - Does anyone have a chickpea recipe that the kidlets enjoy? I'm looking, but not finding anything so far.
OH AND LAST CHANCE TO ENTER THE GEORGIE LOVE SUPER DOOPER GIVEAWAY. WINNERS ANNOUNCED TOMORROW FOLKS!

Cold Feet

french knot sheep

Every Winter is marked by my cold feet.

Matt's solution last year was ugg boots. I wear them. But I still put my cold feet on him when we are in bed.

Ugg boots are not to be worn out of the house a la Pammy Anderson. If I did this, I'd just look like some housewife loosing a war with bad fashion and lack of sleep.

Want more Cold Feet? Looky here.

PS - Pammy is a spokesperson for PETA, right? Well what's she doing wearing uggies? Uh oh.

Kiddie Craft:: School Holidays

here's Tiny flirting with the camera on our way back from our holiday
So we're into our first round of school holidays. After spending four fantastic days with my parents (and my sister and her family) we're back to the humdrum of life. This means the Doctor has spent plenty of time around plenty of people, and has now returned to hanging with his mama and little sister. Matt's sadly back to work (come home, we miss you!).

First up this morning, two fresh batches of playdough. Yum. I like just squashing this in my hands, warm, it feels sensational. Beats a stress ball any day.

I'm enjoying the freedom that comes with holidays. Even though we're at home. No having to wake Tiny up in the mornings (she's an 8am kinda gal). No crazy dash to down breakfast. No mad tussle to get out the front door for pre-school. No bad traffic (well hardly a speck). I like it. I even like not having sewing on so that I can just roll into my evenings, tonight I'm planning for some on-couching hand sewing. Ah yes, just the way I like it.

What are your sure-fire ways to keep a cruisy holiday cruisy? Do tell!

I'm Back. And 20 Kilos Heavier.

Ahhh Easter, how we love you so. If only I wasn't prone to eating so much chocolate. I've finally overdosed and am on the search for anything salty to tame my taste buds. I'm sure though, I'll be ready for more doses of chocolate later in the week (like I need it).

Ahhh Easter, if only you could have given me some self control, rather than chocolate. I'd quite like that. The ability to say, no I couldn't possibly eat my 50th Easter egg. Or no, no, thanks that first piece of Easter cake was delicious, I couldn't possibly go another. Or even, no one glass of wine is plenty for me. If only.

So now our little family is coming down off the chocolate-y high that is Easter. After a wonderful weekend away visiting my family, driving home in the rain, bumper to bumper in traffic, curling towards the city, thoughts turn to normal life, and oh how I pine to escape again, once more out of the city.

Hello egg lovers, how was your Easter?

PS - I do believe I only have 9 (!) entries to the GEORGIE LOVE SUPERSONIC BIRTHDAY GIVEAWAY. Yowsers. Where is everyone? Want to enter? It's super dooper easy. And chances of winning at this stage are ridiculoulsy good. 1 in 3 punters are going to win at this rate. If you know what's good for you, enter now (pictured above is one of the three gorgeous prizes - this one is a ridiculously cute wooden bead bracelet from Dick & Dora)!

POSTED!

Yikes. Christie is probably going to knee-cap me with her thimble for being incredibly tardy, but I had a brain block, got stage fright and essentially, was just very disorganised.

But folks, I finally, well I should say, we finally got our Great Mail Swap posted (and we've already received a gorgeous lil letter from Charlie!).

The Doctor has been singing Happy Easter to us to the tune of Happy Birthday for the last couple of days. He knows someone fluffy with a cute tail brings something sweet on Sunday. We're off to visit my parents in Tamworth.

Have a wonderful Easter with your families. Peace out.

The Egg Flippin' Truth

We finished the foam eggs, but the world knows, it requires some restraint from me, because I keep casting my mind back to the 'bedazzler' and thinking how razzly I could make these babies, if only the Doctor let me. They're a little bit Faberge, a little bit...morning infomercial. He tells me - they're finished.

No matter which way I look at them, I love them.

Needless to say, the Doctor stuck a few bling blings on, but left me to my own devices once he got bored. Oh how that was like being given reins on a beautiful steed to ride off into the sunset. Or maybe it was like being just told you can stick the sparkles on to a foam egg, both prospects excite me.

Later today we might try Amber's confetti eggs. The Doctor loves hole-punching (am happy to rent him out for hole-punching duties if you're in the midst of filing-a-go-go).

(Don't forget to enter the supersonic Georgie Love Birthday Giveaway!)

Long Drives

I know this road by rote. I know where the road curves and highlights the perfect arc of mountain against the sky. I know where the cows take shelter when it's too hot. I know the perfect place to spot crows by the side of the road, feasting on roadkill. I know where the Highway Patrolmen take their naps while they monitor speeding cars. By heart, I know the train crossings, I know just how long it is 'til the next town. I know by each town, how long it is 'til our final destination.

We travelled this road countless times when we were growing up. To visit my grandparents. To visit family friends.

On a long drive, I can feel equal mixes of excitement, adventure, pure unadulterated giddiness and homesickness. I can feel like I am free as a bird. Possibly even freer. With a full tank of petrol, the road is our shining star, to follow it whichever way we will.

If you're travelling over Easter, travel safe.

A Vested Interest

I've started stitching some little singlets for Tiny. I've never made anything for her, except the pom-poms, and this is only small. But from little things..

Stitching is like keeping time. I know when things are made because of the size or the style of my stitch. As I learn, I evolve my work, it's just small. It's just little. But little snippets of my creativity might just make it into my little people's lives when they are older.

More little things over here.

An Eggy Update

Have you ever had eggnog? I've not, I used to think it sounded terribly romantic, until I read a recipe and realised that it truly involves eggs. Ik! Eggs are not so romantic in my book. However, the Doctor and I have been getting into our Easter crafts with great aplomb, there goes my house cleaning for the morning. Oh well. We've got results peeps, and they're quite cute.

First up for this morning: foam eggs. We painted two of these babies with a mix of acrylic paint and PVA glue. This seals the foam and allows for an optimum work surface. We also stuck a wooden skewer in them to minimise paint/PVA mess, and fingerprints on the egg. This is just the first step on this egg craft journey. Stay tuned.
Second egg craft activity: foam eggs with fabric scraps. PVA glue is required again, wooden skewer is optional (I went without, the Doctor went with), I chopped up small scraps to make them even smaller, then we went to work sticking them randomly onto the foam egg. I wonder if you can guess which is mine and which is the Doctor's?
Third egg craft for today: as blogged about earlier, this one's straight from Amber's idea factory. It's easy and quick to realise your Easter egg dreams. All you need is some cardboard, an egg shape (I used a cookie cutter and drew freehand because my middle name is Matisse - ok ok, it's not, but it could be if I changed it by deed poll), some foil, some paint and some cotton tips, or the end of your paint brush. Here's where my key learning comes in for today. Don't put out more than 2 paints, unless you dig on the colour brown.
You know brown is great if it's chocolate, dirt, cake or a little cat or shaggy dog, but I am not a big brown fan. I saw a woman on the weekend dressed head to toe in brown. I'm talking, dark brown hair, brown sunglasses, brown top, brown skirt, brown tights, brown shoes, brown handbag, everything BROWN. Hey lady, you're not a gigantic walking, talking poo, stop with the brown.

Back to the crafting at hand. A good time was had by all.

Oh we did manage to do one other crafty eggy thing. I picked up this neat little pack of dyes from the local IGA (for international readers, that's a small, independent, local supermarket) for next to nix. We popped some boiled eggs in the dye mix and look at those colours. Loving them.
And now friends, it is time for the small fry to sleep and for me to make hay.

Digging On Ditching

I'm digging on ditching daylight savings. It means I get up extra early and can make hay while the sun shines. Well the sun's not shining so bright here today, but it's still just as super.

The Doctor is home from pre-school, sick. Tiny is in fine form, trying her darndest to get the Doctor's goggles on while she nibbles toast.

I've got to get some work done today, so am busy looking for some crafty Easter collaborations we can work on.

Do you get Kids Craft Weekly? If not, you certainly should! Amber has such beautiful and fun (for both parents and kids) ideas - painted foil eggs are on our crafty little menu today!

AND you can't go past the Kiddley archives. Such a rich resource that we're all lucky to have access to. Claire's creative genius is.. well GENIUS!

Polka Dot Kerrrazy!

Merde! Blogger is once again at it, rotating my photos. I've tried rectifying the situation, but to no avail, so my friends, turn your head instead.
Today we went to the MCA to see The Mirrored Years by Yayoi Kusama. I was expecting polka dots, and she sure delivered. Spotty mirrors on arrival, spots, spots, spots, and - in my books, you can not fault a good polka dot. The Doctor really dug the mirrored room, and in fact, most of the exhibition (particularly the spotty ultraviolet room - super cool!). We met up with one of my best friends and looked around, enjoyed a chai latte, and then caught the train home.
Fact: The Doctor woke up at 4:30am this morning. Here's cheers to daylight savings ending. Who wakes up at this time by choice? Certainly not me. I'm longing for a sleep in. I've been reminisicing about sleeping in all weekend. These vibes did not rub off on the smalls no matter how many psychic thoughts I put out there.

Keep On Stitchin'

I signed on for the Georgie Love Swapapalooza. Call me crazy, since you've probably NEVER seen any finished projects here, but I'm hoping (fingers crossed) I can get my sister to help me stitch something up in time for my swap partner. I can't get this song out of my head, but never mind, I'm sure my swap partner might like something half finished. Some random bits of embroidery. Are you biting your nails in anticipation? Jeepers, I sure am.

While I've been creating in my head for my swap partner (these things must be kept a secret, surely?), I've been stitching away on the couch at night. Still aimlessly stitching. I don't know what I am going to do with these, but I've had fun stitching them up.

As usual, they're from Sublime Stitching.

Do You Ever Take Pets Shopping?

Tiny and I went grocery shopping today. I had been putting it off for almost a fortnight. We'd been living on rice and red beans. Not really, but it was beginning to feel that way. I managed to pry myself off the couch and go where no trolley had been before. Ok they've been there plenty of times. Let's face it. Those trolleys are dirty, heinous little creatures that stay out late and get... trollied.

Tiny and I conquering the aisles. Look at us shop. Woohooo! We're like Thelma and Louise of the supermarket. Watch us ride over the edge of the frozen section.

It was only when we got to the checkout that I realised I had inadvertently brought one of our pets with us. I saw a silverfish scuttle from one of our green bags under the scales. Yuck. I pretended I didn't see him, though he was a rather over-sized little blighter. Double yuck. Anyone got any cures for silverfish? I keep bringing them up here because they keep appearing - right here. Right in my little home. I don't dig 'em.

On a brighter note, the Doctor stayed home and hung out with my parents in law. He came back into our house hauling some mean loot. One of which was this delectable box - how gorg is that? Now I'm just figuring out how many Thomas trains it will take to switch it out and make it mine. Mwhahahaha.

Average April

There's nothing wrong with being average. Most people are average on first glimpse, though once you take a closer, longer look, they are supersonic. Charge your glasses, because FINALLY Magical March is at a close. Phew. There were days when I didn't think I would make it all because of the pressure of my own sodding project, but I've made it out the other side. Thanks to everyone who participated.

As part of April I am going to be blogging daily about what's average in my life. Just jokes. BUT - exciting things happening here right now-skis...:

- received my copy of Meet me at Mike's - so exciting, can't stop looking at it. But where to start? 26 projects to choose from... Where are you starting? At the start?
- my Mum brought down my grandmother's sewing machine. The one that was missing the pedal. Yes. Now thanks to my Mum it has a pedal and is ready to roar into the evenings. I've been practising sewing making a bath mat and towel for the Doctor's doll house
- we're getting ready for the Super Dooper Mail Swap organised by Christie at Pigeon Pair. The Doctor's excited big stylie to get some mail, and we're super excited to be getting crafty with some postcards. Just don't expect too much from us, alright?
- my Dad thinks I seriously think alright is spelt awright. Nope - Dad I really know how to spell it, I was just being a geezer
- it's raining and I love the rain. Perfect for snoozing
- I played a really great April Fool's joke on my sister - yeeehaaaaw!
- Easter is JUST AROUND THE CORNER - giddy up, Easter craft here we come.
