Stealing Flowers

Spring Flowers image via Johanna Laskey

The other day I was in my garden, and saw someone out the front of our house - just outside our front fence. I noticed they were loitering, so I stood watching. They were there for a long time, and then I realised - they were picking my flowers from our garden.

Who does that?

I coughed - which was code for: "I am here, I see you, get the hell out of here - oh and PS - it's bad luck to steal flowers."

Except this woman, with two children, kept picking my flowers - despite seeing me - she had just moved to where another shrub obscured her even further.

Now who does that?

I know you might think I'm a bit crazy, but I walked to the front of our place - right out to the footpath, to find the woman, and one of the children madly pillaging our garden for our flowers. Finally, once she saw me standing there - she crossed the road, and walked up the other side of the street.

Er... Last time I checked, stealing flowers from someone else's garden was not cool.

I know it's not scandalous, but I felt pretty outraged that this woman so blatantly just picked my flowers. If I want flowers, I want to pick my flowers (but I like them in the garden) - but mostly I buy myself a cheap bunch from the fruit & veg shop.

Do you steal flowers?

I can't believe that someone would do that - and with their children...what kind of message is that giving them? Although I have witnessed an old lady with a walking frame lean over someone's front fence and break off a whole branch of frangipani - I seriously don't know where she got the strength from!

So true. We are always on the lookout for wildflowers but have rules - not at anybody's house, only if there are heaps on a tree... That is crazy that she did it even when you were there! Bad citizen. I concur.

oh this happened to my parents too but their thief was a disgruntled neighbour who would use garden scissors to tear up her neighbours gardens during the wee hours of the morning - crazy people out there!

I do.

Guilty. Not heaps tho. One at most. Just to have in a jar at work or something. But standing there harvesting is wrong wrong wrong. And doing it while the owner is right there is jerk behaviour plain and simple. Sounds to me like you need a nice straw broom you can chase her down the street with...

Yes, but not when the flower owner is there watching!

This old woman leaned in to our garden (when we were in inner-city Melbourne) and PULLED OUT A WHOLE SHRUB. I was laughing in shock/rage.

When I'm old(er) I fully intend to be that old(er) lady in a house dress, slippers with flesh coloured socks spraying everyone who walks past with my hose (soaked in ice). Honestly. People are annoying.

Totally not cool! I wouldn't steal flowers. My little miss and I do admire other peoples flowers in their front gardens and try to name them....but I would never allow her to take any.
