Knit-Picker

Last night I decided to cast on the Doctor's scarf. He wanted blue, and since I have a mean addiction to Debbie Bliss cashmerino aran (all thanks to Alexis at Knot Sew Crafty), so I sourced this pale blue. I like to think of it soft as a snowflake (and in fact, I think I will throw in some Winter white to mix things up a bit).

Lo and behold, I had completely forgotten how to cast on. Well I thought I remembered. Did it, cast on 40 stitches, started knitting - and uh oh - it all went wobbly. So I had to pull it all off the needles and start again. And again. And again. I googled a few casting on videos but man, do they think I am
Inspector Gadget with go-go gadget fingers?! I can't cast on that quick - that's why I am watching a video via the interwebs peeps! Slooooow down.

And then I came across this pearler. Super simple, easy to follow, I didn't even need to watch the whole thing because I got it. So easy!

New knitters, come, watch this video and cast on without shame!

The thumb cast on is the only one I can manage... I always have trouble with that little loopy knot thingy at the start though!

I cast on like that one time with my mother (who has been knitting for over 60 years) watching and I nearly gave the poor woman cardiac arrest she was laughing so hard. In fact she fell off the bed! (we were sharing a hotel room at the time) She had never seen anyone do that before!!

Apart from having the needle and the yarn in opposite hands to that shown here, I have been using that cast on for about 20 years!! If you are careful with the first line of actual knitting you get a nice even stretch across the band which is perfect for baby clothes especially, which is what I knit most often. I regularly freak out other knitters at snb and other meets because of the speed you can do it at. The only drawback is the first stitch you "knit" can't be a purl as it undoes the loop so you need to cast on the last stitch like a knitting cast on (pretend you are knitting the first stitch on the needle and instead of putting it on the second needle put it back on the first with all the other stitches) then you can start with a purl stitch if you need to. Good luck with this method it has served me well, and as you have worked out, most importantly is easy to remember!

Validation word:genesses. I like to think it's saying geniuses!!
