The Perfect Bed?

Matt and I have an almost weekly argument. It's almost a ritual. It's a ritual that has been carried out for most of our married life. Not in the beginning, because Matt was too polite. I say 'was too polite' because now he's told me the truth.

Controversially, Matt does not like sleeping with a flat sheet and blanket. He only likes a doona.

Me? I like a traditional bed. I call it traditional because I imagine the Queen sleeps on a properly made bed. Generations have slept this way. It's just the way it is. And I like it like that. Fitted sheet. Flat sheet. Cotton blanket. Doona. Quilt if need extra warmth. I like the option of switching things up. I don't like being too hot. I don't like being too cold. I am the Goldilocks of beds.

I like hospital corners. I like ironed pillowcases. I like multiple pillows.
Weekly we engage in a tug-o-war over the bed. And our bedding. It's not a heated argument by any stretch, but it's a niggling disagreement.
And Matt now wants to 'trial' sleeping with just a doona. What is he? Crazy? No way Jose!

I just did my hospital corners this week. I was so proud. The doona is now rolled up at the end of the bed and the fitted and flat sheet are on. The extra "blankie" is folded up in the room just in case summer turns to winter in some random weather event.

I am with you on this one. But must say I do not mind the doona on its own. Just means you create way more washing when it comes to changing the sheets. Not a fan of changing the doona. I have mastered it though. Turn it inside out and then get tangled amongst all the feathers.

I married a soldier, hospital corners it is, but he does them, win win. We have seasons in Canberra & layer the bed, but when we lived in the tropics for many years, a top sheet was too hot!! I do insist on super thick Irish linen sheets though, my parents keep buying them in Europe for us, we have enough to last us a lifetime.
We have bigger issues, like the groaning noises our springs make. I'd like to think it's all the boudoir action our bed has seen making 4 babies, alas, it's those 4 children jumping on our king size bed which is way too much like a gym floor begging for tumbling & trampolining that has killed it. Next move, we're getting a new mattress, yippee!! Love Posie

I have given up on this very argument, we now have just the doona, a lighter one for summer and a heavier one for winter. Makes the bed very easy to make, and hotel rooms even more of a treat when I get a top sheet.

I'm a sheet girl for sure. It makes the bed warmer in the winter, it just somehow seems to keep those little draughts off. In summer you can kick everything off but still drape a whisp of sheet over your kidneys. My kids on the other hand, believe the extra sheet makes more work IF they should ever make their beds so doonas it is for them. Cherrie

I'm with you and I absolutely must have the top sheet folded squarely over the blanket/doona. I can't abide it not being right and blanket at my face.
Drives the Mr a bit spare.

If it was a matter of the doona being too hot for one or too cold for another you could try the European style of 2 single doonas each in the desired weight...

this is a timeless battle for married couples, it seems....i'm totally with you! my hubby is a good one, in that he at least allows for the sheet and the doona and the hospital corners, but then they're always untucked on his side and hanging over on my side. my gripe is that when he rolls over in bed, he just rolls (covers and all). he doesn't do the courteous 'lift and roll' so as to not disrupt the covers on the other person.

i enjoyed this post. will be eager to see what develops.

I'm with you. Our staffy sleeps with 'just a doona'. He's lovely. I can introduce them.

Im just a doona girl myself though recently ive introduced the flat sheet for the sole purpose of it matching the pillowcases. But, quite frankly it`s a pain. It gets tangled and sometimes lost amongst the doona. And i dont tuck, nor iron, nor fold. My bed is lucky to even get made some days. Oh and cushions must be kept at a bare minimum.
Just as well were not married, eh?

Yes my boyfriend drives me CRAZY with his doona-only policy. When I change the sheets I always put a top sheet on, but he kicks it off and makes sure it's all over my side - ruining my sleep in the process so I have to take the sheet off until the next change when I put it on again in the hope he might have changed his mind or not notice. I don't understand people who don't want a top sheet.

When you sleep next to a man who is 6'4 and 120 kilos with limited coordination, you could only imagine how he looked in the morning tangled in our sheet. Think of a net of fish with a big humpback stuck in the middle.
So we did away with the sheet and are doona people. I add a quilt over the top, like my old throw back to the sheet but in reverse. It just looks nice and royal like.
I do love my old gumboot. He's just not a dainty soul.

hehehe. you're funny, lady. i have to admit that splurging on new linen gives me more enjoyment than clothes. i love linen shopping. we just got a gorgeous new king bed and every time i get in it i comment on 'how much i love my bed!' I like traditional bedding too. and a hot water bottle in winter. Yum!

No flat sheet or blanket under the doona?!

All I can say is the dirty, dirty bugger, in my best Catherine Tate voice.

Hmmmm, my take on this is that doona covers are too expensive not to have a protective layer between you and them. Why not tell him the facts that we lose 10% of our water weight in sweat while we sleep each night, then take him donna-cover shopping somewhere fancy ;)

Best of luck with that battle!

Um, just quietly Lex, I'm with your hubby on this one (hi Matt!) Can't handle too many things to contend with on the bed.

Sorry. Still friends? x

The flat sheet keeps curiously going missing off our bed. Hubby is in Matt's camp with a no sheet policy, while I am all about a sheet and a doonah. No need for an extra blanket here at the Gold Coast as it doesn't get cold enough.

I think I'll go and sneak the top sheet back on right now...

:)
