Baby I'm Bored

Once upon a time I had this discussion on MumSpace (which, BTW, I no longer run). I mentioned how I just don't understand cars with 'Baby On Board' signs.

I see those signs and wonder - "Is someone about to have an accident, and then swerve to miss those cars because they realise there's a baby on board?"

Then someone responded and said that if there is an accident, then the rescue team can see the sign and look for the baby. But this just doesn't make sense to me. Wouldn't the rescue team naturally just search the car - and a car seat would be more of an indication that a flimsy little yellow sign?

So I've come up with some other signs - only to discover that someone has already stolen this idea straight out of my brain. I'm calling the copyright cops for a citizen's arrest.

But anyway, here are my ideas. All two of them:

* Baby I'm bored (because sitting in traffic is never fun)

* You are passing another foxy lady (instead of you are passing another Fox - get it, get it???)

I actually get more distracted by those signs because I start looking inside the car to see the baby! One of these days I'm going to rear end some poor person.

I'm much prefer your version. The emergency services thing never occurred to me!

I have had this convo with my other half who just so happens to work in emergency service biz. Apparently years back in USA I woman was thrown from her car and when the grown ups got to the scene they treated her, but no one went to check the car and the baby was in there in it's seat and died, unattended. So she started this little sign so in future someone might think to check the car....

But of course in good ol OSSI (thanks Oprah) they always check the car and area for occupants of the vehicle.

I like your signs much much better.

I always thought the signs were to warn you that the driver was sleep deprived and in la la land so watch out!

For reals? They are so people will check for the baby? I too always thought they were so people behind you would give erratic parent driving a benevolent nod and move into the other lane. Which just seemed really silly to me.

In the heat of the moment I don't actually think seeing the sign would even spark anything in my teeny little panicked brain.I'm not a fan but I guess they have their purpose, I much prefer yours.

oh THAT is what they are about... I just thought that when a southern cross sticker, and a set of frangipani stickers mated, this is what was borned...

My sticker would read:
screaming, tantruming distractions in my back seat, keep a wide berth... or else.

No way? For checking if there's a baby. What are they hiding them in the glove box? Can't be.
Like the two you came up with though. They could check to see whether I am slumped over my wheel for the first one. Perhaps I'd been listening to drive-time commercial radio.

i don't get the sign either. Just like I don't get frangipani stickers on cars. I've actually seen a sticker that said "F*** Frangipanis" - ha! I've got a DVD giveaway happening - you might like it for your little ones.

Apparently that checking for a baby in the car story is an urban myth, there's a mythbuster's style website, can't remember what it's called, that dispells the myth. I received a "child on board" sticker with a new car seat, I've actually put it on the back of the babyseat on my bike so that when I'm out riding with bubba in the bike seat cars might be a little more careful of my bike and precious cargo. That's the only valid use I can think for them. Love the comment about frangipani + southern cross stickers mating.

Didn't realise you weren't Mumspacing anymore, might 'unlike' the page, some of the threads/comments make me want to rip my eyes out.

I have wondered about these myself...like are you a more special driver because you have a kid with you?

I want to see "dog(s) on board"

but I do like, spectacularfairywren's "screaming, tantruming distractions in my back seat, keep a wide berth... or else." that's too funny.

Well said! I was just about to blog about the exact same thing and then came across your post.

I also don't get the purpose of those stick family car stickers that seem to be everywhere at the minute! So annoying but i cant help but look at them, very distracting.
