The Radioactive Child

I'm like some kind of baking zombie at the moment. I don't remember ever making quite so many cakes in such a short period of time. I'm pretending to loathe it, but really, it makes me happy making sweeties. So much icing sugar. So much...colour!

Today I'm whipping up a batch of little cupcakes for all the darlings (and would be thugs and fairies) at the Doctor's pre-school so they can woo him with a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday.

What to do with the leftover icing? I can't just eat it. Or can I?

PS - When should one expect the other mothers at pre-school to make some eye contact with me and say hi? I thought second term they might be able to. Apparently not.

You'll just have to take the high road & do the smiling & talking. Surely they'll love you.

Hmmm a difficult one. I agree with Kirsty - maybe just take the plunge and walk over and introduce yourself and hope for the best!

in my experience they are just as tentative about making 'contact'. Maybe pick someone whom you haven't seen chatting with others and take the plunge...

Leftover icing freezes well - perfect for little decorative piping efforts on the next batch.

Of course cake also freezes well...but you'd know that...

Ditto the icing in the freezer... or what about a little nibble first?? As for the other mums... think you've got to take the bull by the horns, so to speak... it's a shame when it takes a while. I've had a few different experiences of this and usually it's been up to me to do the talking. Good luck and hope you get somewhere soon!

hmmm i'm worried about those mums in your hood, they sound a little insecure. i'm gonna go against the grain here and say don't bother if you ain't feeling it. save your lovely spunky friendliness for people u gel with, someone special will emerge from the boaring mob i'm sure.

I have to tell you, the more the mums at Caleb's kinder talk to me that more I wish they wouldn't. I got to agree a little with Home Girl and wait to see if you can find "the feeling". I went to the kinder trivia night and realised that they had no interest in their kids or any real idea who they were - a little scary really. One mum said she would prefer her 4 year old watch Hannah Montana then cartoons. I would be asking the Doctor who he feels friends wih and asking him to introduce you to the parents, they love that sort of thing, and if the Doc likes their offspring, hopefully the parents have something to offer.

oooh I vote eat the extra icing!
(of course, that may be why I go up a pants size every birthday cake baking season!)

I'm with Cindy here - great advice from her as always!

I tend to hate everybody until I get to know them a bit. Then I feel sheepish - they are usually, as Keith would say: 'just little guys trying to get along in the world...'

Maybe I'm just a hopeless misanthrope.

But be careful what you wish for too - you might miss the trackie-dacks and bad mood freedom once you are in with the crowd and have to be all social every day.

When I was a kid, my mum would always have a packet of Milk Arrowroot biscuits in the cupboard. If she ever had any left over icing, she'd put it on the back of the biscuits (sometimes with some hundreds and thousands) - bonus super-treat for me and my brother!
