While We're All Here

While we're all gathered 'round ye olde computere screene enjoy this relic. I found myself humming this song the other day. How's that for a pang of nostalgia?

Wish me luck, the smalls have been bickering hardcore since 7am. It's continued since then with the Doctor telling both Tiny and I that we are too rude. Whatevs! I need to time-out myself.

Send Out A Salute

Thanks to those who gave me book recommendations for the Doctor. We got 'Beginnings and Endings with Lifetimes in Between' by Bryan Mellonie and Robert Ingpen. We'll visit the library over the weekend to find some more.

Today is a really difficult day. One of those days when you wake up and no matter what, you can't lull yourself back to sleep because you know what's to come.

Make sure you hold your smalls close, breathe them in, hold them, really, really hold them. Remember that. Take a mental snapshot. Write about it. Breathe them again. Tell them you love them. You can never tell them enough.

Good night sweet prince
And flights of angels, sing thee to thy rest!

Remember

Remember holding a new babe in your arms. The way she looks at you adoringly. Remember this. Etch it into your memory. Hold tight, it won't be long before she's crawling away discovering, but she'll always remember your voice. Your calm touch. The way you look lovingly at her. She'll remember the way you always wanted to be close. Remember that life changing moment when she just smiles. Grasp it firmly, never let it go. Those coos. The way she's happiest just to be close and listen to your heartbeat. Remember the smell of a newborn. That milky, sweet goodness, just at the top of their head. At the nape of their neck.
....clucky much?

...Remember?

It's painful to think back. It almost gives me anxiety. But here, I'll confess it. When I was a teenager I was so tall and lanky that I'd always wear baggy clothes to disguise the fact. Keppers (gulp). Malcolm X tee shirts. Arrested Development tees. And bandanas. Apparently I was the one and only member of my posse. In deepest darkest regional NSW. So 90s it aches.

I visited my sisters in Sydney during the school holidays and returned home with a VERY Beatles-esque hair cut. I remember my art teacher actually laughing in my face. Ouch. Thankfully my sister (who was responsible for putting me in that hairdressers chair) and I can laugh about it now. But during those days of growing that painful hair cut out, I endured some harsh words. Teenagers can be criminal with their honesty.

Thinking back now, I rue some of the ridiculous things we did as teenagers. While we thought we were ridiculously cool, others probably saw us as awkward. Remember?

As a special treat, here's one of my favourite loveable, huggable type of guys. Some of them try to rhyme but they can't rhyme like this. Some of them try to rhyme but they can't rhyme like this. You'll be relieved to know I never wore my jeans backwards.

ANZAC Day

Today is ANZAC Day. Have you ever been to see the diggers march through the city? I love it. Though we didn't do it today, maybe next year when the kidlets are a little bigger. But seeing those service men and women march is incredible. It has really helped me understand that these are real, live people that went off at an incredibly, heart breakingly young age to fight for our country. And many of them never returned. It made me realise just how many people went off to war.

My favourite spot to perch is right across from the non-marching servicemen and women and nurses. My goodness it is a good spot. They see someone they know and call out and a short dialogue ensues, just as the marcher is marching off. Left - right - left - right.

So I'm watching from home today, with the stray tear in my eye, listening to stories, watching with pride. I love the bagpipes. I love the drummers. It's incredibly moving. If you get the chance to go and watch next year, do it.

Still on the Aussie front, last night I started making my first project from the Mike's book.

Ta da! It's not finished, oh so close! This is Angela's (Three Buttons) pattern (check out her blog, it's delicious. It's capricious). It's the very handy 'Shopping bag keep-safe' that my kitchen needs! Oh yes, it needs it. I try not to have many plastic bags, but they do somehow muzzle their way into our kitchen and cause quite a riot. What a mess! This is a cure, and it just so happens - shazaaaam! It's an Australiana teatowel. How apt.

And now folks, it's on with the show. I'm going to whip up a batch of ANZAC biscuits to keep the memory alive. Smell some rosemary for rememberance. It's a small tribute.
Here's to honouring the sacrifices made for us. Lest we forget.
