Day 14:: The Half-Way House And I'm Stomping Grapes

Are you shocked? Tiny and I are. We're just plain plum loco for the fact it's almost half-way and we're still frocking hard core frockers.

We've been stomping grapes like there's no tomorrow, and singing everything. Because quite frankly, we're the stars of our very own mega-musical.

Today's outfit:
- vintage dress on (permanent - HA! don't worry she never reads this - she'll never suspect a thing) loan from my sister - thank you!
- Country Road cardi
- Saltwater sandals from Little Pinwheel
- silk scarf from Calico + Ivy

If you'd like to sponsor me and help fund the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, please go here. You can even suggest a theme for me. Go on. Do it!

Day 13:: Frocktober - Vintage Is Calling Me

The sun was shining. The birds were singing. This morning I rose early to go meet my sister and check out the markets together before she started work

Plus I went to look at the new range of Liberty Art Fabrics that have just landed in store at Calico + Ivy. Holy toledo - they are beautiful. Of course they are. They're Liberty. But the heavier weight means there's a whole new world opened up in crafty projects. (See my snap below of Kate's installation.) Ahoy!

Another day, another dress, hey?

Today's outfit:
- Country Road cardigan
- vintage dress that I've only ever managed to wear twice since owning it for about eight years (big fail on my part)
- belt, Mum's
- necklace - Alexandra Blak
- Donna Sgro tights
- Country Road flats (because CR are the only company that make shoes big enough for me - sad story)

If you're mighty interested in sponsoring me, I'd be mighty interested in having you as a sponsor. All money goes towards research for ovarian cancer screening. Currently there is none.

(Photo taken by my sister at Calico + Ivy, Balmain. If you've not been before (to Balmain or Perth), whether you're crafty or not, you should take a look, it's an enchanting store full of fabrics, yarns, giftware, amazing books and incredible hand made jewellery).

Day 23 of Frocktober: The Ham & The Minx

I had a wonderful afternoon at Calico + Ivy,  listening to Kelly Doust  of The Crafty Minx fame speak about her new book.

Kelly is an amazing, immaculate, beautiful and inspiring creature with genuine verve for her craft - vintage clothing. She lives and breathes it, and is a joy to listen to, imparting her knowledge of new to her frocks, and how to fix them, give them a make-over, or give them new life.

Definitely, 100% check out her new book Minxy Vintage - available at Calico + Ivy, BTW.

Day 23 of Frocktober: vintage dress, my favourite heels. Strange expression home-made. Photograph by my sister - thanks Choc for capturing my ham.

Everyone Else's Cats

We'd just visited my sister's shop and were heading back to the car, when we met Tesco, the local cat. I love a cat that sprawls on the footpath for a pat. Oh for the life of a cat!

PS - Do you love Tiny's styling? Spiderman pants, Babushka skirt, Bensimon sneaks. The girl has a wacky style. But it works. She's hilaire.

Support Your Local:: Shop Loyal

I am one of those people that loves bookshops. I love the smell of them. The look of them. I love spending time in them. I love meandering down the aisles, picking up books, flicking through them, finding hidden gems, smelling those crisp new pages, those new images. I love my kids being able to look at books, find new favourites. Explore classics. Feel those pages. I've got so many happy bookshop memories, and I remember where most of my books are bought from, which holidays, who I was with.

But apparently, you're not going to be able to do that in five years time if we keep spending like we do. I'm not going to be able to do that. You're not. My kids aren't. No one can.

Pip wrote about this a month or so ago. About supporting local booksellers. (I can't find the link but if you do, it's worth a read).

And we're all too aware of the demise of Angus & Robertson. The loss of local jobs. The loss of livelihoods. And the loss of books.

But it's not just books that are going to be burnt if we continue to spend our dollars offshore.

It's all our local sellers that are hurting. Losing business. Losing their livelihood.

And you're there thinking - well I save dollars! I like a bargain. I like mail!

Ever wondered why all our retailers seem to be on this endless merry-go-round of sale after sale after sale? Oh yeah. Because we're all too busy online shopping and receiving the cheap thrill of a parcel in the mail.

And if you think it's ok to peruse the shelves of a local retailer - scout out the goods - and then go home to Google and buy it online? Think again. Show some integrity! As my sister so eloquently puts it here - you're using and abusing locals. Your neighbours. Your friends.

So despite the fact I couldn't find the book that I wanted on the weekend, and I could go online and buy it in a snap, I've called a local bookseller to order it in. It does cost a little more, but it's worth it to help keep someone's livelihood afloat. I'll miss out on mass consumerism happily, and enjoy the things I buy local, in the hope that my kids, your kids and our fellow Australians can keep on experiencing the happy joy of the smell of a bookshop, or that cute little shop you so love to visit.

Or if the lure of that parcel arriving in the mail is still there, indulge in some ace local shops that I know can more than fill the void:

- The Children's Bookshop (Jodes is right, I visit here weekly, amazing selection - they have a bricks & mortar store, but you can order online and over the phone)

Spend how you want to spend, but if we all thought about where that money goes, the end outcome, and the thought that if we don't spend local, we're going to move closer to a recession and less beautiful local shops to peruse, then we can all spend smarter.

Queen's Birthday

To ward off the grey that has been this weekend, check out this little magenta vignette. Pretty flowers from a friend, Tiny's Tupperware and some new yarn I picked up at Calico and Ivy.

Charmed, I'm sure!

Small Joys for Japan:: An Update

So cats, today I bundled the smalls into the car and headed off pronto to see my sister at Calico & Ivy.

I needed an update on the softies that have been flowing in from all you rad people. I'd heard lots about them, but hadn't had a chance to get in there. And today... WOW!

My oh my - so much cuteness, so much love - thank you! I can't wait to bundle them up to send off to Operation Angel to be flown over to those in need in Japan.

But don't let time deter you - because if you'd still like to send in a little cutie (and I'm not talking any wayward toddlers), there's still time! We're collecting until the end of April, and we've got a drop off point near you. Or at least, almost near you. Check 'em out:

Exciting! Small Joys for Japan

I dropped into Calico & Ivy yesterday to say hi to my sister. I was blown away by the gathering of small friends awaiting their trip to Japan. And I know there are more on the way. There's plenty of time to donate a soft toy to be sent to Japan. It must be handmade or new. We're going to run until the end of April. That's plenty of time to get your stitch on. These little peeps told me "the more the merrier" on their merry journey. That's the word on the soft-toy-street. Thanks to everyone who has donated already - I am so excited and inspired.

My sister, Sarah, over at Calico & Ivy has whipped up a delightful ladies afternoon.. Oh me, oh my! If you've not already seen it, Kelly Doust of The Crafty Minx fame will be hosting a decadent high tea and Easter crafting extravaganza (or eggs-travaganza if you want me to be cornball to the max). Aye carumba! How lovely does that sound...? It sounds delectable to this little pottymouthmama!

There are limited places so you'd better get in quick!

Something Sweet

Sometimes you need to be whisked off to another place. Even just for a few brief moments. Just for something sweet. Or something inspiring. Or perhaps both? I'll take you. Hold my hand, I promise it won't take long! Unless we get talking, then it could take longer. I do like to talk.
Last week we managed to pop into Calico + Ivy Balmain and say a brief hello to my sister on her first day. Apparently we arrived at just the right time, the lid was lifted on these incredible macarons - colours which remind me of Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette. Sweet world! Their taste matched their look. Plus I am sure you could colour match those delicious morsels with many fabrics in the store.

Sneak Preview: Calico + Ivy

I've been lucky enough to spend some time watching my sister work away tirelessly for months pulling together Sydney's own Calico + Ivy store. It's been a delight to watch, and it's most certainly one of those places you could happily spend at least a couple of hours. It's that beautiful. So much to look at, so many beautiful pieces, and so meticulously curated. It's an inspiration haven.
Even if you're not crafty you'll love the array of hand-made and even vintage pieces that Sarah and Deb have collected. Perhaps I'll become crafty-by-osmosis.

The Good News Is...

If you've ever stepped foot into Calico & Ivy in Perth, you'll know that it's a beautiful place to visit. My sister introduced me to the shop on my one and only trip to Perth back in '62 (ok it was 2007), and ever since, I've thought about that beautiful space and the goodies within.

Pretty soon you won't have to visit Perth to taste some of the Calico & Ivy sweet action. You can read more here - and finally the secret identity of my very clever sister is revealed. Yes there she is - WOMP there it is!

That's exciting news - yes?

On the homefront, we insisted on Tiny having a sleep yesterday. She woke up a completely different person, fresh for Halloween. And she wasn't even a ghoul! On the insistence of the Doctor (who didn't want to dress up), we went trick or treating. It was, despite my aversion to Halloween, really fun.

Thanks for everyone's kind words on the Tiny front. It made me feel infinitely better. Phew. That's gotta be good!
image via the Calico & Ivy website - how cute is that? I want to uproot our family and move straight in! That black beetle is the clincher.
