Sneak Preview: Calico + Ivy

I've been lucky enough to spend some time watching my sister work away tirelessly for months pulling together Sydney's own Calico + Ivy store. It's been a delight to watch, and it's most certainly one of those places you could happily spend at least a couple of hours. It's that beautiful. So much to look at, so many beautiful pieces, and so meticulously curated. It's an inspiration haven.
Even if you're not crafty you'll love the array of hand-made and even vintage pieces that Sarah and Deb have collected. Perhaps I'll become crafty-by-osmosis.

The new Calico + Ivy opens on Monday at 10am.

The Good News Is...

If you've ever stepped foot into Calico & Ivy in Perth, you'll know that it's a beautiful place to visit. My sister introduced me to the shop on my one and only trip to Perth back in '62 (ok it was 2007), and ever since, I've thought about that beautiful space and the goodies within.

Pretty soon you won't have to visit Perth to taste some of the Calico & Ivy sweet action. You can read more here - and finally the secret identity of my very clever sister is revealed. Yes there she is - WOMP there it is!

That's exciting news - yes?

On the homefront, we insisted on Tiny having a sleep yesterday. She woke up a completely different person, fresh for Halloween. And she wasn't even a ghoul! On the insistence of the Doctor (who didn't want to dress up), we went trick or treating. It was, despite my aversion to Halloween, really fun.

Thanks for everyone's kind words on the Tiny front. It made me feel infinitely better. Phew. That's gotta be good!
image via the Calico & Ivy website - how cute is that? I want to uproot our family and move straight in! That black beetle is the clincher.

The Things Sundays Are Made Of

The Doctor and I have been enjoying time together.

Given he's gone completely plum loco bored at home, he missed a few weeks of pre-school, and told me he was sick of lying on the couch feeling tired and sick, I wanted to do something special to make the holidays fun. Not big over the top special, just making memories sort of special.

Matt was going to take him to see Toy Story 3 yesterday, but Tiny went bananas and I guess Matt sensed I was over Tanty Town, so he suggested I take the Doctor. PHEW!

I love those moments when it's just the Doctor and I. And there's nothing to read into that. I just enjoy having that one on one that we used to enjoy together pre-Tiny. I think it's important to 'date' each of my kids and enjoy special things together.

Today I took the Doctor (with my sister) to Kinokuniya. The Doctor is a big book lover. He had a gift voucher burning a hole in his pocket. So we three drove into the city and indulged in a couple of hours of perving on books.

I felt so excited to look at books with the Doctor. There are so many great reads ahead for us. We've read Alice In Wonderland, we're half way through Charlotte's Web, we've read How To Train Your Dragon, and we're also digging Milly, Molly, Mandy.
I truly believe that reading and reading with your child is one of the best gifts you can give a child, and one of the most important things to do. So much can be learnt, dreamt, thought of - just from reading each day. We try to read to the smalls every single night, it's really rare that we don't each lie in bed with them to read for a little while.
Lately thoughts have turned to my own reading habits. They are abysmal at the moment. I do like reading recipe books, but lately I get some screen time and go on a tour of the interwebz, here, there and everywhere. And all the bedside matter is lying dormant. Right now I'm reading Revolutionary Road. I'll talk more about that later this week (I've seen the film - have you?).
What book are you reading right now? (Well not RIGHT now, but this week?)
I need to set an example and pick up a book. I want my kids to see me reading. To see me devouring a book. I love writing, and I believe that that goes hand-in-hand with reading. I'm looking for books with instant gratification. Vampire novels and any mystic-fantasy type reading need not apply. Hit me with your recommendations!
* This is a pretty great read about reading and aspirations.
* Here's an article about how reading online can shatter your concentration. Twitter. Blogs. Email. FourSquare. Oh man. I am all over it!
* Last chance to enter the Teddy Bear's Wednesday super awesome giveaway!

Perhaps You and Me? Yes. We Should Catch Up

When we moved we celebrated Matt's birthday on the same day of moving (happy birthday Matt - here's the removalist truck with two hot removalists to boot). And the Doctor's 5th birthday was celebrated in the first week.

It was a big and exhausting week and only now do I feel as though we are settling in. Phew. We still have boxes to unpack, but we're slowly getting there. Slowly.
I really just wanted to put this photo (taken on my phone) of my smalls for posterity. The Doctor's birthday and he's off to preschool wearing his Rummage crown, given by my sister.

Travel Tips?

My sister is about to jet off to the US for some serious fun and frivolity. Do you have any ace, just gotta know travel tips about San Francisco, Texas or NYC? If so, please share! Any secret holes in the walls that she must visit? Anywhere she's just got to check out? Anything she definitely just has to do?

The Doctor & His Cush

Something spectacular happened today. Something out of the ordinary. Something so exciting I almost feel like singing songs very much out of tune. Are you ready? Are you perched on the edge of your seat?

Today I went to see my sister about a cush. Not just any cush. The cush that has been in the works for a couple of months. It was looming over me, and the Doctor had mentioned it and I just needed to finish it. Well actually, I just needed her to finish it.

So here 'tis. The Doctor will arrive home from pre-school and I'll not spill a word. I like it best when he notices small things such as these himself. Or else I get too excited and just tell him. I'm like that you know.

Please note Boombastic and Ned are the best of friends and are hanging out on the bed waiting ever so patiently for bedtime.

But here's a warning for sisters of the world. When stitching, it's a good thing to pay attention and not commence nattering. In the latter picture the cush is upside down. Can you tell what's wrong with this here dear cush?

Baying for Blood

Last night my sister and I went into the city. We were buoyed by excitement of what's to come - the Young Blood Designers Market. And then we turned up and a bazillion people were standing outside the Powerhouse Museum and we made two more.

The security guard was turning people away because they had too many people inside - and they told all of us standing there that there was not a chance we were going to get in unless we'd pre-paid for our tickets. Ho-hum.

So my sister and I stood there for what kind of seemed like a long time. We ummed and ahhed. We could chance it and beg to get in, or make the most of having our husband's babysit, so we hit the high road and went off to Ariel. There's no mistaking it, we know how to party.
The long and the short of it, as soon as we got home we pre-purchased our tickets for today and rolled up today and rolled straight in. It was worth it, so many great young designers in one small space. But take my advice, if you want to go next time, buy your ticket in advance.

From the Adventures of Thrifty the Wonder Mama

I found some other cuties the other day on my thrifting adventures. It's funny. Well not laugh out loud funny, maybe not even funny, perhaps just peculiar. I do the rounds of the shop, then go for a second round. Usually on the first round I come up empty handed. The second round is when I yield the goodies. I get bamboozled on the first round, second round I'm calm, I know the field I am playing and I can relax and really look.

I found these beauties for just 2 clams.

I was thinking of making them into something (because let's face it, when it comes to making things I am *ahem* the bomb with my exemplary track record), given whoever made them put so much work into them, I wanted to continue their journey, but then my sister gave me the super idea to frame them. Enjoy them as they are. They're pretty spectacular no matter which way you look at them.

It's Me: Day 3

Day 3 reveals that yesterday I was wearing my very favourite tee (it's Genki). Again. It's easy to wear. I don't need to justify it. Right...? Right...?

Yesterday we spent a glorious morning at Balmoral with my sister and her little girl (that would make P-Bee my niece). The sun was shining. The seagulls were swooping. The babes happily played together in the sand. Tiny got a little too up close and personal with a wave.

Hello Spring - I've seen you around the traps lately. Let me invite you in. Stay awhile.

When The Doctor Was Born

My firstborn. My heart. I remember waking with a sore back. I knew the sign. Matt had long gone to work. I had a plan to meet my sister for shopping. I knew I was in pre-labour, but who knew how long that would last? And as if birth was going to get between me and a cash register. No way Jose.

I drove off to meet my sister, all the while my back pain increasing, a sneaky contraction here and there. I sent Matt an SMS "It's a nice day for a baby" to which he didn't reply (I later learnt his battery was almost dead).

My sister and I shopped. Things were ramping up. I could feel that baby was coming. I went back to my sister's house to watch some waterbirth movies. I'd heard that watching these can bring things on a little quicker. After my movie time was over, I drove home. I don't really remember that drive, but I do remember pulling into our driveway and my father-in-law and a handyman telling me that they were doing some jobs around the house. Fabulous timing because all I wanted to do was crawl into a steamy hot bath and say vamoose to the sore back. I did. I threw caution to the wind. I got in that bath. Then got out. Dressed. Decided to go for a walk to get some things to make Labour Aid. Clearly I was delusional. I walked the two kilometres and all the while my contractions were coming on stronger, more rhythmically.

I stopped off at our local Blockbuster and as any reasonable labouring woman would do, I hired Sex and the City. I remember standing in the store experiencing a contraction. Breathing. Hmmm. Hoping no one would notice a heavily pregnant, heavily breathing woman.

When I checked out the DVDs the guy said a cheery 'see you on Sunday' - and I thought - no buster, you won't. I'm about to have a baby. Overdues - I'll see you sooner.

I don't know how I got home on that long walk, but I know I had to stop here and there to rest. Breathe. Breathe. Open.

I walked home. Made Labour Aid. Got lemon juice all over the floor. Bottled my Labour Aid. Rested. Another bath?

Matt finally come home and I remember my aching body being held in his arms. Ah relief!

We had a quiet dinner together (hey - things can get a little rowdy around here), and went off to bed. I slept until around 1am when things started really ramping. And I vomited (there's an ongoing theme of vomit here lately, isn't there?). I had all the lights off. I hate lights when I feel unwell. I am an animal in the dark. I sit in the bath again. I feel my contractions. I feel them grow ever stronger. I get out because the bath isn't hot enough. Matt's still sleeping. How ever do men sleep through such a mad racket?

Finally, around 2am Matt came out to find me labouring away, I think by this stage I was back in the bath. We decided to call my sister who was coming with us, driving us to the hospital and who would be with us throughout the birth.

I sat in the darkest room in our house. Matt kept turning lights on. I kept turning them off. Breathe. We were in touch with the midwife, and we knew we had a 40 minute drive ahead. The midwife tried to stave us off, but I knew we had to go. I was ready to go. We clambered into the car. My fashion sense clearly thrown out the window. Me in Matt's old paint splattered tracksuit pants, a very worn, almost transparent t-shirt of a Chinese woman smoking an opium pipe (?), Birkos and a quilted cotton Chinese jacket. Very continental. I'm sure the world has never seen such haphazard styling before.

My sister drove like the clappers. Down the highway, I felt every bump. Every single bump in my bump. In my heaving body. Breathe. Hold the seatbelt away. Drive behind a garbage truck. Thankfully it was 3:30am by this time. Traffic was clear. This baby had good timing. And then the Labour Aid exploded all over my foot. Excellent.

We arrived at the hospital and the guy at the front desk insisted we fill out the forms before going up to the Birth Centre. Then I, leaning over the reception desk let out an almighty moan and he realised I was in labour, so reluctantly let us go up. We went up and went into our room. Dark. Quiet. The midwife expected me to be 3cm dialated. Instead I was 8.

Briskly (as brisk as any labouring woman can) I tore off my clothes (I couldn't bear my fashion genius any longer - truth be, I can't stand being dressed when feeling ill either - must be dark, must be naked - how wrong does that sound when typed?) and got into that bath. Oh that bath. That gloriously deep, seductive and calming bath. Hot! Hot! Hot! I laboured away for the next couple of hours in that bath.
Matt had a sleep. MATT HAD A SLEEP! --- Apparently just another day in the office for him. Meanwhile...
My contractions became more and more fierce, I rode them out, but I was growing tired. I held Matt's and my sister's hands. And then my contractions. My contractions - they damn well stopped! I had to get out of the bath because apparently I was too relaxed. Damn it. There goes my water birth. All throughout the birth our wonderful ante-natal teacher had been calling us to see how things were doing. That woman is a guru.

I got comfy on that birthing ball and cushions, propped up.
And after two hours of puuuuuuushing, (and me going, I can't do it, I can't do it - and everyone else saying - you ARE doing it, you ARE doing it, and then me going - COME ON! Lleyton Hewitt stylie) that big-headed, cone-headed, Mohawk-ed baby finally, finally came out.
That there friends is how the Doctor arrived. 10:02am on the 20th May.

Keep On Stitchin'

I signed on for the Georgie Love Swapapalooza. Call me crazy, since you've probably NEVER seen any finished projects here, but I'm hoping (fingers crossed) I can get my sister to help me stitch something up in time for my swap partner. I can't get this song out of my head, but never mind, I'm sure my swap partner might like something half finished. Some random bits of embroidery. Are you biting your nails in anticipation? Jeepers, I sure am.

While I've been creating in my head for my swap partner (these things must be kept a secret, surely?), I've been stitching away on the couch at night. Still aimlessly stitching. I don't know what I am going to do with these, but I've had fun stitching them up.

As usual, they're from Sublime Stitching.

Magical March: Day 3

It's hard to think of something magical today. I am sure I can think of something. Hmm. Nope.

Tiny was awake from 1-3am. I don't know why. She was just banging on about something for what felt like foreeeeever. Maybe I should have gone out for a few late night drinks with her. At least that would have felt productive. Instead of going in and out, in and out to check on her.

So today, I am officially zombie-fied.

And you know, my babes are always in tune with when I am going in to work. Perhaps that's why the late night sad-ons.

Which brings me to something pretty magical. This vintage jacket. I haven't worn it for yonks and yonks, but I am so happy to have brought it out for another wearing. It's my favourite work wear. Clearly I don't work in a bank. It's like the perfect antidote to working - it's still a jacket, but it's candy seersucker. You gotta be happy with that.
Can't remember where I bought it. Brand is 'Gingerbread'. That makes it even better in my book. And today it does sport a cute little button my sister bought me here.

It's Cake O'Clock!

Yesterday I mentioned I did some baking while the Doctor was at pre-school. Something I enjoyed immensely because it's been a long time between cakes when I could wield the wooden spoon and not have someone small pining for a taste test. Just me and the bowl and the spoon. Ah yes, I remember this freedom of baking.

The Doctor has been asking for eons if we could make a chocolate cake. For some reason even unknown to me, we just didn't do it. Yesterday I baked the little dude his very own 'Hey-You're-At-Preschool-And-I-Know-You're-So-Thrilled-And-Perhaps-Not-So-Thrilled-That-I-Picked-You-Up-Early-But-Hey-I-Missed-You' cake.

Et voila! (see the small hand in the frame - ready to pounce!)

My sister's recipe. You can visit her blog if you like. Though for some reason she and her blog have taken some kind of vow of celibacy and she's not blogged since September 23 (8:51pm to be precise). Not that I'm taking notes. But she's just moved back to Sydney, you'd think she'd have something to say, apparently not. But anyway, her recipe is damn fine and damn easy. Even Marie Antoinette might like more than just one piece of cake, cake, cake.
And while I'm here, some interesting reading to keep you going:
- for anyone that has to endure hours of TTTE
- do you believe that Freecycling can become bigger than hard rubbish throw out? I don't.It would be good if it did, but then what would I do as a hobby (priorities!)? And anyone some people just don't dig the internet. Or as they might like to call them - the internets.
- do you love Maggie Gyllenhaal like I love her?

Bathing Al Fresco For Babies Al Dente

My sister gave me this great idea to give the smalls their evening bath outside. This is day two and it's wonderful. Fantastic. Fun. Super cool. Great great great.

We went to Bunnings to make a grand purchase. 'The biggest bucket in the world' for the Doctor to relax in. Well we got a tub - kind of like a kiddie jacuzzi and he digs it. He carried it around the entire time we were there.

Tiny gets the baby bath which she sits in and then sneakily tries to stand in until Matt firmly tells her to sit down. We don't be needing grass stains on her small face now do we?
It's still stinking hot here. 41 stinking degrees today to be precise. I had a great idea to build a snowdome over the top of Sydney. Well I think it's great anyway. I can't stand this darn heat. It stinks.
I can't even bear to cook at the moment, so I'm skiving off with anything I can think of. Tonight BBQ chicken and a salad I whipped up (now that takes talent folks). I am running out of cold meals that the smalls can eat as well. I may have to *gasp* actually cook something this weekend.
And on another front, and purely for posterity I must record here one of my very favourite quotes from the Doctor from this week when I reached over the car seat to get him something:
"You're a good reacher Mum! You have very bendy arms."
Ah yes. I am Gumby hear me roar. Yeah you heard me right, I roar baby. But only on the hottest of days.

Picking Up The Pace: Super Pretty

I've decided to pick up the pace - I'm celebrating one year of PottyMouthMama tomorrow, and I am starting daily blogging again, I've been a little lax.

This morning I met my sister at the markets. We were prepared for all sorts of beauties. I'm not sure what she thought she'd snaffle, and really, I'm not sure what I thought I'd snaffle (a few lucite necklaces, some gorgeous ceramics, a new vintage skirt), but it was a little disappointing. More stolen goods than vintage beauties if you get my drift.

Reminds me of the time (the one and only time before you start thinking I am some jet-setting goddess) Matt and I were in Paris. It was cold. It was grey. We caught the metro to the flea market - I had ideas in mind of generations of forgotten furniture, discarded Dior, boxes of Balenciaga, lost Louboutins a jewellery box full to over-flowing of costume jewellery. Boy oh boy, I was excited.

My excitement lasted all of about 30 seconds when we arrived at the marche aux puces. Nothing like what I had imagined. It was a market like one of those set up at the show - cheap socks, cheap and mass-produced clothes. Sadly I left empty handed. We quickly stepped back onto the Metro 'cause things felt a little shifty. The train got stopped and checked over by the police. Nobody allowed off. Nobody allowed on. I remember my heart - Boom! Boom! Boom! What a dud!

Back to local markets - we found a lady selling the most delicious selection of mismatched crockery. Here are my buys for the day.

The Aftermath

The handkerchief has been gifted. The wedding is over. I was the last bridesmaid standing. All the others flew the coup. How did it happen? Perhaps my dancing scared them off. I am known to break out a bit of line-dancing and slap leather. Yeeeeehaaaw!

In any event it was a wonderful day. The ceremony so moving. I never cry at weddings, but several times had to fend off the tears. Never fear, I didn't let a tear roll - I didn't want to ruin my make-up.

And now here's the aftermath. The anti-climax if you will.

Though for me it's all about letting the good times roll.

My sister and her family have just moved back to Sydney. How totally and utterly exciting for us. This can only mean good things for me. Let the good times roll sister! Those who thrift together, stay together. Or haggle between one another for the best of the best at the markets, the op shops, oh such fun.

And me. Well I'm enjoying a little downtime. I didn't get a chance to get started on the next handkerchief, so thought I might do something today, as well as juggle some work and of course - be a mama. Then I'll post it over to my friend for when she arrives back in London...

For now, I'm still madly de-cluttering, filling my house with pink carnations (what in tarnation, it's a carnation!), setting up the raddest track alive courtesy of this very generous lady, and trying to move as little as possible because it's so impossibly hot-hot-hot.

PS - The winner of my giveaway is Taccolina. Hit me with your address and I'll promptly clutter your house for you!

I Think I May Be In Love. Again.

Is it too soon to fall in love? Surely not? I dumped the bin a couple of weeks back. I'm ready to move on from that garbage. Boom boom!

I have a new crush.

I've always loved Etsy. Since way back when. And now I've found a new favourite to flirt with. Roma Winkel.

To lust after. Check it out. Hand painted softies. So beautiful. So amazing. So cool. Discovered via here.
